Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Area releases interactive tour application.
Niagara Falls, NY- The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Area Commission is set to release a tourism app for use on mobile devices next Thursday, May 1st at the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center (NACC) at 6 p.m.
The app is run through OnCell-TourSphere and will feature an interactive driving or walking tour of the Underground Railroad sites in the Niagara Falls area. Users of the app will be able to find historic site locations via Google Maps, and each site will have an information page as well as historic images.
The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Commission is hosting a launch event for their app Thursday, May 1, 2014. The event will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center (NACC). The community, public figures, and press are all invited and welcome to attend. The program will feature a brief overview and demonstration of the new mobile application.
The tourism app is featured in the OnCell-TourSphere’s April newsletter, which can be found at http://bit.ly/1fGwNmC.
Brochures featuring app-linked QR codes will be made available for future distribution as well.
The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Area Commission hopes that locals and visitors alike will take advantage of the application to learn more about the rich Underground Railroad history in Niagara Falls. The Commission sees the mobile app as an important initial step in fulfilling its mission of preserving and interpreting the local history of the Underground Railroad and promoting tourism and recreational opportunities, even if it is only bringing the area’s local underground railroad heritage to the world’s attention “virtually.”
The mobile device app was made possible with the generous $10,000 grant from the 1772 Foundation, Inc.
